St. ANDREWS SUNDAY SCHOOL
Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it (Prov 22:6)

Sunday School, as an institution, arose out of a concern for wasted childhood. Missionaries like William Carey, in their efforts at evangelism, set up many churches and schools. Realising that Sunday School was such a powerful medium for the growth of Christianity, William Carey and his associates Ward and Marshman, known as the Trio of Serampore, set up the first Sunday Schools in India from about the year 1800. It was a concern that led to the foundation of St. Andrews Church in 1897 and it is certain that from its very inception, the Sunday School also flourished here.

Acknowledging the fact that the learning begins at birth and that early spiritual training is of prime importance, we realise that home is the first school and parents the first teachers. The first 5 years are the truly formative years and habits formed during this time are hard to change and generally stay for life. Sunday School and the Sunday School teacher are the extensions of the home and the parents. To be a Sunday School teacher is a privilege for she holds in her hand tremendous power to influence the child.

In the early Sunday School system, only preachers and professional teachers were given the responsibility of conducting Sunday school. However, dedication, intuition and wisdom are no less worthy attributes in a Sunday School teacher. She is essentially a lay person of the congregation and does not specialize in any religious teaching.. She takes on the onerous responsibility to fill the great need for God and His church. Such a duty cannot be treated casually for she is directly involved in God’s command to teach. A blessing indeed; but what responsibility she shoulders!

That St. Andrew s Church stands firm ands strong today, after a hundred fruitful years, is testimony not only to God’s Grace but the dedication of each successive generation of teachers who took to heart the responsibility to “train up” the children.

The St. Andrew s church conducts Sunday School for children every Sunday during the worship service. Teachers impart Bible knowledge through songs, Bible stories, story telling and activities such as painting and memorizing Bible verses to children.

Bible quiz competition and Special Bible Exams are conducted regularly by other churches, where our children take part increasing their knowledge and participation spirit.

Vacation Bible School (VBS) is an Annual Summer Event conducted with much fanfare not only for children of St. Andrew's Church, but also children of other churches and even children of the locality. The needs of this VBS are met by the church members themselves. Every VBS will have Special Director trained to conduct the VBS for 10 days and a Special Theme is opted by the National VBS organisation every year

We are the fruit born of the concern of preceding generations. Let our concern be to see that the succeeding generations remain strong and faithful for our Lord. It would not be out of place to mention that many elders of the church presently are the products of our Sunday School system. May St. Andrew’s Church, its faithful congregation and its Sunday School grow from strength to strength.
